TERMS AND CONDITIONS
This document contains a summary of some of the Rental Conditions. For full detailed Conditions refer to the Conditions schedule in the Rental Agreement. Please note all prices quoted in this document are in New Zealand dollars. Rates and Conditions quoted in our brochures and/or documentation are subject to change without notice.

RENTAL DURATION
Rental Cars

Early return of vehicle does not entitle the hirer to any refund of the unused portion of the rental. Maui allow a grace period of 59 minutes before the hirer is liable for late return charges. Failure to obtain authorisation for a rental extension will result in a daily fee of $NZ150 in addition to the daily rate.

Late return fees are applicable as follows:

  • 1 hour late, one third of the daily rate will apply
  • 2 hours late, two thirds of the daily rate will apply
  • 3 hours late, one full day rate will apply 

    ONE-WAY RENTALS
    Rental Cars

    No additional one-way rentals fees apply. Minimum rental period of 3 days for one-way rentals.

    MULTIPLE RENTALS *


    Should a hirer have more than one rental (multiple rentals) then these rentals can be combined to qualify the hirer for our long term rate. Motorhome and car rentals in Australia, New Zealand and Southern Africa, for both Britz and Maui, can be combined to qualify if travel is within a 3 month period.
    e.g. One 14 day rental plus one 7 day rental qualifies for the 21 day rate.

    For pick-ups and drop-offs on the same day, the daily rental charge for the last day of the 1st rental will be charged, and the daily charge for first day of the subsequent rental will not be charged. This will also apply to the Excess Reduction charge, only within the same country.

    The One Way Fee (if applicable) and charges for additional hire equipment (tables, chairs, baby seats) and additional extras (PGO, PFO etc) will be charged per vehicle rented.
     

    BRANCH HOURS FOR PICK-UP AND DROP-OFF
    Auckland, Christchurch, Queenstown.

    Auckland and Christchurch: Daily from 0700 to 1800hrs, closed Christmas Day.
    Queenstown: Daily from 0800 to 1800hrs in the summer months, daily from 0800 to 17oohrs in the winter months, closed Christmas Day.

    Pick-ups and drop-offs after branch hours may be available by prior arrangement.
    (Late returns will be charged on a per day basis)

    AIRPORT CONCESSION FEE
    An airport concession fee may be charged for hires with pick-up or drop-off from airport locations. An airport pick up fee of NZ$10 will apply for all hires with pick up at Queenstown airport. This surcharge is payable to Maui directly upon collection of the vehicle.

    FOR YOUR PROTECTION 
    New Zealand legislation provides limited coverage for personal injury. We strongly recommend that all people travelling in New Zealand take out Personal Travel Insurance.

    All vehicles are insured for  the damage to the vehicle or to the property of a Third Party.  The hirer is responsible for the first NZ$1,800 (“the excess”) for Rental Cars of the cost of damage to Third Party property or to the rented vehicle, including single vehicle accident, windscreen and tyre damage, overhead and underbody damage, towing and recovery costs, theft, fire, break-in or vandalism. This also includes the cost of the daily rental for the period the vehicle is off fleet for accident repairs (demurrage).

    The excess applies in respect of each claim, not rental.

    The excess is applicable regardless of who is at fault and must be paid at the time the accident report is completed, not at the completion of the rental.  The excess will be refunded if we are successful in recovering the cost of the damages from the Third Party.  Please note that Third Party Claims can take months to resolve.


    Please see the ‘Exclusions’ section below, whereby all Excess Reduction cover will be made void.

    The excess can be reduced, in most circumstances, by the purchase of Excess Reduction Option 1 or Excess Reduction Option 2 for Motorhomes ot the Excess Reduction Option for Rental Cars.

    With the Excess Reduction the hirer is responsible for the first NZ$220 of ANY ACCIDENT COST of damage to Third Party property or to the rented vehicle, including single vehicle accident, windscreen and tyre damage, overhead and underbody damage, towing and recovery costs, theft, fire, break in or vandalism.  This also includes the cost of the daily rental rate for the period the vehicle is off fleet for accident repairs (demurrage).     PREMIUM COVER OPTION (PCO)

    Where PCO is taken out at a flat rate of NZ$40 per rental in additionto the Excess Reduction Option, the hirer will not have to pay any excess at all for any damage to the vehicle or property of a third party.

    MAUI STRONGLY RECOMMENDS OUR CUSTOMERS TO TAKE EXCESS REDUCTION OPTION 2 FOR TRAVEL WITH COMPLETE PEACE OF MIND.

    EXCLUSIONS:
    The Excess Reduction Option and PCO for Rental Cars does not cover:

    1. Any water related damage, which includes but is not limited to:
    a) any vehicle submersion
    b) creek or river crossing
    c) driving through low plain flooded areas
    d) beach driving

    2. Personal belongings: We recommend the hirer does not leave valuables in the vehicle and that they take out personal insurance.

    3. All Excess Reduction is void if the terms of the Rental Agreement are breached.  The hirer will be responsible for the total cost of any damage.  This will also include any damage caused by wilful misconduct (e.g. sitting or standing on the bonnet or roof of the vehicle) and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

    4. The incorrect use of fuel (fuel being diesel or petrol).  The hirer will be responsible for any associated cost.

    5. The cost to retrieve or recover a vehicle which has become bogged, regardless of the Excess Reduction Package taken.

    6. The cost to replace keys which have become lost, or retrieval of keys which have been locked in a vehicle.

    VEHICLE SECURITY DEPOSIT

    On pick up of the vehicle, a Vehicle Security Deposit is payable.  The amount is determined by the Protection Package selected (refer to the “FOR YOUR PROTECTION” section). 

    Rental Cars
    If you do not take Excess Reduction Option, the Security Deposit is NZ$1,800 payable by cash, Traveller’s Cheques, or credit cards. Should the Deposit be paid by cash, a cash qualification process will apply. If paid by credit card, authorisation will be gained for the NZ$1,800 security deposit.

    If Excess Reduction Option 2 has been taken the Security Deposit is NZ$220 payable by cash, Traveller’s Cheques or credit card. Should the Deposit be paid by cash, a cash qualification process will apply. If paid by credit card, authorisation will be gained.

    The Security Deposit is fully refundable provided the vehicle is returned on time, to the correct location, undamaged, with a clean interior and with full fuel tanks (Fuel being petrol, diesel and LPG gas).

    We reserve the right to retain a NZ$125 soiling fee if the vehicle is not returned with the interior in a clean condition. The toilet and waste water tank (if applicable) must be emptied prior to the return of the vehicle, or an additional NZ$125 soiling fee will be retained.
    Except where the customer has purchased PGO and/or PFO, failure to return the vehicle with full petrol, diesel and/or LPG tanks will result in refill charges. Petrol, diesel and LPG gas refill charges will be advised upon return of the vehicle.  In the instance of Excess Reduction Option 1 and Excess Reduction Option 2, the credit card voucher will be returned to the hirer.

    Except where the customer has purchased PGO and/or PFO, failure to return the vehicle with full petrol, diesel and/or LPG tanks will result in refill charges. Petrol, diesel and LPG gas refill charges will be advised upon return of the vehicle. 

     

    INFRINGEMENTS
    We reserve the right to charge the hirer for any speeding or parking fines, associated administration costs and/or accidents including third party property damage not reported on return of the vehicle. The administration fee per fine will be NZ$60.

    EXCHANGE RATE / CURRENCY VARIATIONS
    All credit card transactions are conducted in New Zealand dollars. Due to exchange rate fluctuations there could be some variance in the amount refunded compared to the amount initially charged. Maui does not accept any liability for variances up or down.

    CREDIT CARDS
    If a credit card is presented as payment, the credit card holder will be jointly and severally liable as a customer. Preferred credit cards are Visa Card, Mastercard and American Express.

    LICENCE
    A full resident country drivers licence, held for a least one year, is to be presented at the time of rental. If the licence is not in English format, an international drivers licence is also required.

    AGE RESTRICTIONS
    Drivers must be 21 years of age or over. A medical certificate stating that the customer is fit to drive the vehicle they have booked for the duration of the hire is required for drivers over the age of 75.

    CHANGE OF DROP-OFF DESTINATION
    If the hirer wishes to change the drop-off destination after the rental has commenced, they must first obtain authorisation from the Reservations Centre in Auckland. Subject to the change being approved, an additional charge of up to NZ$500 will apply.

    RENTAL EXTENSION 

    If the hirer wishes to extend the rental whilst on hire, they must first obtain authorisation from the Reservations Centre in Auckland. This is subject to availability. The extra cost of an extended rental must be paid by credit card over the telephone on confirmation of the rental extension.
    Failure to obtain authorisation will result in a daily fee of NZ$150 in addition to the daily rate.

    ROAD RESTRICTIONS
    Motorhomes can only be driven on sealed/bitumen or well-maintained roads. No vehicle shall be driven on Skippers Road (Queenstown), Ninety Mile Beach (Northland), Ball Hut Road (Mt. Cook), North of Colville Township (Coromandel Peninsula), and Tapu-Coroglen Road (Coromandel Peninsula).

    Maui reserves the right at its sole discretion to restrict vehicle movements in certain areas due to adverse road or weather conditions.

    ON-ROAD ASSISTANCE
    Any problems associated with the vehicle, including equipment failure, must be reported to Maui as soon as possible, and within 24 hours in order to give Maui the opportunity to rectify the problem during the rental. Failure to do so will compromise any claims for compensation. We do not accept liability for any claims submitted after this period.

    CHANGE OF VEHICLE
    Should the vehicle booked be unavailable through unforeseen circumstances, Maui reserves the right to substitute an alternative vehicle without prior notification and at no extra cost. This shall not constitute a breach of contract and does not entitle the hirer to a refund.

    VEHICLE CATEGORY
    Vehicles cannot be requested by make or model, only by vehicle category.

    VOLUNTARY DOWNGRADE
    Should the hirer decide to take a smaller vehicle than booked they will not be entitled to any refund.

    CANCELLATION FEE
    The cancellation fees are:

    If cancelled  up to 21 days prior to pick-up   

    No Fee

    If cancelled from 21 to 7 days prior to pick-up   

    20% of Gross Rental 

    If cancelled 6 to 1 days prior to pick-up   

    50% of Gross Rental 

    If cancelled on day of pick up or No-Show 

    100% of Gross Rental

    If vehicle is returned early for any reason whatsoever 

    No refund available


    IIMPORTANT
    Maui reserves the right to refuse any rental at its discretion.

    ANIMALS
    No animals are permitted in our vehicles, excluding guide dogs.

    PERSONAL AND COMPANY CHEQUES
    Personal and Company cheques will not be accepted as payment for rentals at the time of pick-up. These must be received by Maui 14 days prior to commencement of rentals. Personal or Company cheques are not acceptable as the refundable security deposit.

    DISCLAIMER
    Illustrations and text in any of our brochures or website are a representation only of the vehicle depicted. Variances in the vehicles offered for rental may occur due to substitutions made by
    Maui or modifications and/or upgrades to the vehicle design made by the manufacturer.
